School supplies for the 2018-2019 school year For your convenience, we will once again be offering online school supply ordering. Canstruction Challenge: Monday, May 14th is the last day to bring in canned goods to be part of our school’s Canstruction Challenge. All canned goods will be used to create a work of art and later donated to the Catholic Charities Food Pantry. Please donate what you CAN!

Catholic Diocese of Des Moines Tent at the Des Moines Art Festival: Click here if you would like to volunteer at the tent in the Kid Zone. Please sign up for any of our available time slots!

Seniors Come Home Mass: We invite all high school seniors who graduated from SFA School to attend mass with us on Wednesday, May 23rd at our all school liturgy. Please help spread the word!

SACK LUNCH FOR FIELD DAY Field day is scheduled for Thursday, May 24th. On field day students eat a sack lunch outside. Monday, May 14th, the school kitchen will be sending an email with information on ordering a sack lunch from school. Please reply to the email to confirm an order. Students are welcome to bring a sack lunch from home. Milk and water will still be available for purchase for students who bring a lunch from home.

School Nutrition is hiring a part time cashier for the 2018-2019 school year. The position is 2 days a week from 8:15am-1:00pm. Responsibilities include cashiering, milk inventory, and a la cart. If you are interested or have questions please contact Cheryl.

Lunch Auto Debit Families: This is a reminder that there will not be an auto debit on May 1st. The final auto debit, on June 8th, will be for the amount that is owed in your lunch account at the end of the school year. You will receive an email by June 1st with your final auto debit amount. Balance information is also available through the parent portal which can be accessed on the from page of the school website.

2018-19 Employment Opportunity: St. Francis Preschool is seeking a part-time Staff Associate. Individual will assist in preschool classrooms Monday (8a-3:30p), Wednesday (8a-11:45a) and Thursday (8a-3:30p) as well as be available and willing to work hours outside regular schedule to provide for possible program substitute staffing needs. Promising candidate will be enthusiastic, energetic and have a passion for working with preschool age children as well as drawn to a collaborative, teamwork environment and eager to learn themselves. Early childhood care or teaching experience is a plus but not required. Health and safety pre-service training is required and provided. Dowling Catholic Basketball Club (DCBC) Parent Meeting: Thursday, May 17th at 6:30p in the Dowling Catholic Media Center. DCBC is for girls grades 6-8. Coach Meyer will be conducting this meeting will be to discuss the 2018-19 season and answer questions.

CFL 8th Grade Parent Meeting: Tuesday, May 15th at 6:30p in the Dowling High School Media Center.  Coach Flood will provide information on the DCHS 8th grade football program and answer questions you may have.

2018 Catholic Football League Registration: Join us for our 54th season as the premier youth football league in the Des Moines metro area. We are once again offering a 10% registration discount to all those signing up prior to the end of May.

Blank Children’s Pediatric Therapy summer handwriting camp June 11th- August 6th: This 8-week program will focus on improving your child’s pre-writing and handwriting skills grades pre-K through 5th. The Handwriting Without Tears curriculum will be used as a basis of our camps. Three separate 60 minute camps will be offered. Cost is $300 and includes all materials. Middle School Summer Math Prep: June 1-June 22.   Keep your student’s math skills sharp this summer as they learn and prepare for next fall’s math curriculum. Classes will be offered at DCHS and are to provide background and enrichment. Students should sign up for the class they will be taking in the fall:

  • 8:15  Geometry,         9:15  Algebra,       10:15 Junior High math

FAITH & OUTREACH
Registration for Vacation Bible School 2018 is now open for both participants and youth volunteers! VBS will be held June 11-15 from 9a-12p for children who will be entering Pre-K (Age 4) through 6th grade, in the fall. Registration Deadline: May 25, 2018. Cost: $50 per child (Fee Assistance is available.)  *If you are registering a child with special needs, please contact the Faith Formation Office by April 30th, so that we can make sure all of your needs are met during this fun week!

Adult Volunteers: We are in need of over 60 adult volunteers for our VBS program. These volunteers are needed for the whole week or even a few days. Adult volunteers can mark it on their child’s registration or contact the Faith Formation Office at 515.440.1030 to sign-up.

Youth Volunteers – We are in need of junior high and high school youth volunteers.You must be able to volunteer for all 5 days of VBS. Space is limited and will be taken first come, first serve.

The Saint Francis Homeless and Hungry Committee supports our community by serving 3 local shelters. Volunteers are needed to help provide that support.

The Connection Café is a free lunch program that serves the homeless and low income community downtown.

  • Each day, over 150-200 meals are served to men, women and children.
  • On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, a group from St. Francis of Assisi Church, serves a warm meal and brings supplies to the Connection Café.
  • Each month, an email is sent out requesting help.  Students can receive service hours by baking cookies, making the main dish, bagging trail mix, or laundry detergent.

Donate unused hotel toiletries (mini shampoos, soap, lotion, toothpaste, etc.) to either of the GREEN bins outside the school office or in the Gathering Space by the Church.  Thanks again for all of your generous donations! St Francis truly makes a difference in our community!

Central Iowa Shelter and Services (CISS) Central Iowa Shelter & Services’ Mission is to provide low-barrier shelter, meals and support services at no cost to adults experiencing homelessness and to facilitate their move toward self-sufficiency.

  • On average 200-250 meals are served, rising to nearly 300 during the winter months.
  • St Francis provides/serves a meal on the 9th and 10th of every month.
  • Volunteers are needed to purchase, prepare and serve the meals.
  • Volunteers can sign up individually or a group can provide an entire meal.

St Joseph Emergency Family Shelter is the only emergency shelter in Polk County where the entire family unit can stay together. They provide safe, clean housing for homeless families for a limited stay.

  • On the 2nd Saturday of each month, a group from St. Francis provides a meal to the shelter.  There are several service opportunities for students.
