ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dowling Catholic Student Helpers: Tuesday, May 1st and Tuesday, May 8th will be the final sessions for the 2018-19 school year.

Lunch Auto Debit Families: This is a reminder that there will not be an auto debit on May 1st. The final auto debit, on June 8th, will be for the amount that is owed in your lunch account at the end of the school year. You will receive an email by June 1st with your final auto debit amount. Balance information is also available through the parent portal which can be accessed on the from page of the school website.

Bedding Plants for Mary Garden: Every year the 8th Graders plant a Mary garden in front of the school. We are asking all 6th- 8th grade students to bring bedding plants, rather than cut flowers for the May crowning, which is Wednesday, May 2. If possible, please send these with your child to
school May 1 and have them bring to their homeroom. You may bring one plant or several. Snapdragons, geraniums, impatiens, alyssum, pansies, marigolds, petunias and zinnias work
particularly well in the garden, which is full sun. If you are not able to get flowers in time for the May Crowning just bring them later in the week.

Dowling Catholic Dimensions Show Choir Auditions will be held on Friday, May 4th from 3:10- 6pm in the DCHS choir room. These auditions are open to current 8th graders. Students should attend at least one choreography audition workshop to receive all the audition materials. Workshops will be held on:

  • Monday, April 30 from 7-7:50a and 5:30-6:30p
  • Tuesday, May 1 from 7:15-8:15a and 5:30-6:30p
  • Wednesday, May 2 from 7-7:50a and 3:30-4:30p
  • Thursday, May 3 from 7:15-8:15a and 5:30-6:30p.

Students are welcome to attend as many of these sessions as they wish.

Non-public transportation reimbursement forms are due by May 1. Parents, if you live 2 miles or more from St. Francis, please complete the form and submit to the school district in which you reside. This is done twice a year.  If you have questions regarding your reimbursement, please contact your resident school district.

Chess Club will be held in the the Sierra Room every Friday from 7:15a-8a.  Contact Sergio Bravo or John Schumacher with questions.

Yearbooks Orders Are Now Closed: books will be distributed at the end of the year.

Wednesday Rosary Join us in saying the rosary before school mass on Wednesdays in the Assisi room at 8:15a. Contact Sheila Thelen with questions.

Dowling Catholic Band Bash

Blank Children’s Pediatric Therapy summer handwriting camp June 11th- August 6th: This 8-week program will focus on improving your child’s pre-writing and handwriting skills grades pre-K through 5th. The Handwriting Without Tears curriculum will be used as a basis of our camps. Three separate 60 minute camps will be offered. Cost is $300 and includes all materials. Middle School Summer Math Prep: June 1-June 22.   Keep your student’s math skills sharp this summer as they learn and prepare for next fall’s math curriculum. Classes will be offered at DCHS and are to provide background and enrichment. Students should sign up for the class they will be taking in the fall:

  • 8:15  Geometry,         9:15  Algebra,       10:15 Junior High math

SCRIP CLIPS:  SCRIP gift cards make great teacher and graduation gifts! Order dates before the end of the school year: April 30 and May 7. There will also be sales after masses on April 29.

FAITH & OUTREACH
Registration for Vacation Bible School 2018 is now open for both participants and youth volunteers! VBS will be held June 11-15 from 9a-12p for children who will be entering Pre-K (Age 4) through 6th grade, in the fall. Registration Deadline: May 25, 2018. Cost: $50 per child (Fee Assistance is available.)  *If you are registering a child with special needs, please contact the Faith Formation Office by April 30th, so that we can make sure all of your needs are met during this fun week!

Adult Volunteers: We are in need of over 60 adult volunteers for our VBS program. These volunteers are needed for the whole week or even a few days. Adult volunteers can mark it on their child’s registration or contact the Faith Formation Office at 515.440.1030 to sign-up.

Youth Volunteers – We are in need of junior high and high school youth volunteers.You must be able to volunteer for all 5 days of VBS. Space is limited and will be taken first come, first serve.

The Saint Francis Homeless and Hungry Committee supports our community by serving 3 local shelters. Volunteers are needed to help provide that support.

The Connection Café is a free lunch program that serves the homeless and low income community downtown.

  • Each day, over 150-200 meals are served to men, women and children.
  • On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, a group from St. Francis of Assisi Church, serves a warm meal and brings supplies to the Connection Café.
  • Each month, an email is sent out requesting help.  Students can receive service hours by baking cookies, making the main dish, bagging trail mix, or laundry detergent.

Donate unused hotel toiletries (mini shampoos, soap, lotion, toothpaste, etc.) to either of the GREEN bins outside the school office or in the Gathering Space by the Church.  Thanks again for all of your generous donations! St Francis truly makes a difference in our community!

Central Iowa Shelter and Services (CISS) Central Iowa Shelter & Services’ Mission is to provide low-barrier shelter, meals and support services at no cost to adults experiencing homelessness and to facilitate their move toward self-sufficiency.

  • On average 200-250 meals are served, rising to nearly 300 during the winter months.
  • St Francis provides/serves a meal on the 9th and 10th of every month.
  • Volunteers are needed to purchase, prepare and serve the meals.
  • Volunteers can sign up individually or a group can provide an entire meal.

St Joseph Emergency Family Shelter is the only emergency shelter in Polk County where the entire family unit can stay together. They provide safe, clean housing for homeless families for a limited stay.

  • On the 2nd Saturday of each month, a group from St. Francis provides a meal to the shelter.  There are several service opportunities for students.
