Faster Than the Pastor 5K walk/run will be held on October 21st. Volunteers are still needed! during lunch recess (11:30-12:45), on Wednesdays and Fridays to help record students’ progress. Shifts are broken out for each recess, but please stay for the entire time frame if you are able. Thank you in advance for your support!
Dowling Catholic Athletic Club has been providing important funding for DCHS athletics since 1941. The club has a new name but the mission is the same – to raise awareness, enthusiasm, and funding for DCHS athletics beyond the bell! Membership provides passes to home athletic events, meaning no waiting in line, as well as campus store discounts. Little Flowers Girls’ Club (ages 5-9) This mother/daughter Catholic girls’ club is a fun and casual group that meets each month, on the second Tuesday from 4:00-5:00. This program reinforces prayer, kind actions and good manners. Childcare is available for other children. Strengthening Families Program: This 7 week program is for parents and youth ages 10-14. Cost is only $19 per family and includes a meal and childcare.
Calling all Elementary and Middle School Musicians! We need you!
- Children’s Choir meets on Wednesdays from 5:45p-6:15p in the school music room. Contact Mrs. Lindsay Struecker for more information.

SFA Chess Club: Students from all grades are welcome to join us every Friday from 7:15a-8a in the school gym. Come prepared to have fun and to learn how to play chess. Contact Sergio Bravo or John Schumacher with questions. Parents are encouraged join us to for as many sessions as your schedule allows to help supervise.
ST FRANCIS NURSERY – SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: The nursery is seeking volunteers 12 and older. Please contact Rebecca Bahl, if you would like to be added to our list of nursery volunteers. Students will need to attend a brief nursery orientation to be part of this list and sign a volunteer agreement.

Volunteer Sign Ups: We are still looking for volunteers:
- PBIS Cart: multiple grades are short of volunteers with Kindergarten and 1st grade having the greatest need.
- Cafeteria: Mrs. Riedl has asked for additional volunteers on the serving line for Tuesdays and Thursdays. She is also short lunchroom volunteers on Fridays.
- Home Room Parents: are still needed for the following classrooms: Mrs. McManus, Miss Neugent, Mrs. Pamperin, Mrs. Thornton, and Mrs. Doyle.
- Parent Party hosts are still needed for Kindergarten, 4th, 5th, 6th, and 7th grades.
- Artsonia: Lots of classrooms are still lacking volunteers for this easy committee role.

Talking Canvas Needs Parent Volunteers! Talking Canvas takes place once a month (Oct – May) for all K-5 classrooms. Each 30 minute session consists of a brief presentation about an artist, then a quick project related to that artist. All materials, presentations/talking points, hand-outs, and project instructions are provided. You simply follow along with the presentation and help the kids with their project. No artistic ability or prior knowledge of the artist is required!

The Des Moines Best Coupon books were sent home with the youngest/only students today. Please consider selling 2 or more books, as the school receives a $15 profit on each book sold. There are five $5 Hy-Vee coupons included in the book. Use these and the book pays for itself! Should you choose not to participate, simply return the coupon books in the envelope provided. The fundraiser will run for two weeks and conclude on Friday, September 29th. Additional details are provided in the coupon book packet. SCRIP CLIPS: SCRIP sales are off to a great start! As a reminder, weekly orders can be sent in by 10:00 am on Monday mornings, and the orders will be ready by Friday of that same week.
There will be a table set up to sell SCRIP in the parish hall during Grandparent/Grand friend Day.

The first order processing date for SCRIP will be Monday, September 11th. Cards will be sent home on Friday, September 15th. Families new to St. Francis: a plastic folder will be sent home with your youngest/only child next week. Please use this to send in your SCRIP orders on Mondays. Filled orders will be sent back in this envelope on Fridays.

FAITH & OUTREACH
Francis Fest: Sunday, October 1st from 4 to 7pm. Activities include inflatable bounce houses and obstacle courses, carnival type games, and face painting. You can also come win a baked good at the Cake Walk, try your luck at BINGO with our Sunsational Seniors, and take a chance at the Wine Walk (21+ only) hosted by Christ Renews His Parish alumni. Additionally, this year there will be a Ministry Fair and an Open House in the newly remodeled Faith Formation Office. All activities and beverages are FREE!! Food is available for purchase thanks to the Boy Scouts and The Ice Cream Truck. All activities will be located inside the school building. Join us – and invite a friend – to celebrate the exciting things happening at St. Francis of Assisi Parish!
The Saint Francis Homeless and Hungry Committee supports our community by serving 3 local shelters. Volunteers are needed to help provide that support.
The Connection Café is a free lunch program that serves the homeless and low income community downtown.
- Each day, over 150-200 meals are served to men, women and children.
- On the 3rd Wednesday of each month, a group from St. Francis of Assisi Church, serves a warm meal and brings supplies to the Connection Café.
- Each month, an email is sent out requesting help. Students can receive service hours by baking cookies, making the main dish, bagging trail mix, or laundry detergent.

You can also help by Donating unused hotel toiletries (mini shampoos, soap, lotion, toothpaste, etc.) to either of the GREEN bins outside the school office or in the Gathering Space by the Church.
IT’S BACK……The GREEN bin for CONNECTION CAFÉ is in the hallway next to the school office.
We donated 3960 toiletry items throughout the 2016/2017 school year, which was an increase of over 1200 donated items from the prior school year.
During the Summer months you were still able to donate items using a 2nd GREEN bin in the Gathering Space by the SFA Church which is there YEAR around.
We collected 1315 items over the Summer months!
Here is how you do it:
If you don’t use your Toiletries while staying at hotels, bring them home with you to donate to the Connection Café. Or you already may have drawers filled with extra mini shampoos, soap, lotion, toothpaste, etc. Bring them in! There are 2 GREEN bins, one by the School office and the second one in the Gathering Space by the Church which are placed there year round so you can continue to donate items.
Did you know that a group from St. Francis of Assisi Church once a month serves a warm meal and brings supplies to the Connection Café? The Connection Café serves the homeless and low income community downtown. They serve over 100 meals each day to men, women and children. Want to help with this ministry? Get added to the distribution list. Once a month an email is sent out requesting help with food and supplies donations, along with an opportunity to serve the warm meal. Students can receive service hours by baking cookies, making the main dish, bagging trail mix, or bagging laundry detergent. Central Iowa Shelter and Services (CISS) Central Iowa Shelter & Services’ Mission is to provide low-barrier shelter, meals and support services at no cost to adults experiencing homelessness and to facilitate their move toward self-sufficiency.
- On average 200-250 meals are served, rising to nearly 300 during the winter months.
- St Francis provides/serves a meal on the 9th and 10th of every month.
- Volunteers are needed to purchase, prepare and serve the meals.
- Volunteers can sign up individually or a group can provide an entire meal.

St Joseph Emergency Family Shelter is the only emergency shelter in Polk County where the entire family unit can stay together. They provide safe, clean housing for homeless families for a limited stay.
- On the 2nd Saturday of each month, a group from St. Francis provides a meal to the shelter. There are several service opportunities for students.
